FUN RUN
full length play
Produced by Balancing Act
Directed by Joe Graham
CAST OF CHARACTERS
Ken Bunten
Creative Director and owner of a small provincial design agency WTBI?
(What’s The Big Idea?) In his mid to late forties. A fairly dour Scotsman
and a miserable man who doesn’t find much fun in anything. He is also the
boss, so when things go wrong for him, no one around him really notices.
The one person he wants to talk to about his fears and problems, he is not
able to.
Libby Ashton-Drake
(Olivia Ash) Not a titled lady, just one of those who puts her surname and
husbands surname together to make it sound double-barrelled.
She is an interior designer with her own one woman business. She loves to run to
keep fit and is obsessed with charity runs and raising sponsorship...as long
as she can be seen to be doing it. She now has higher plans to create and
build her own charity based on a problem her husband suffers.
Sean O’Connell
Senior Designer at WTBI? Not because he is the oldest and more experienced, at around 30, but because his CV says he previously worked for Saatchis’.
Brian Feeley
‘Touchy’ as he is known in the office due to his name and his sensitive, geeky nature. He is around mid-twenties in age and a lover of comic books and superhero movies.
Amanda/Mandy/A
The new receptionist. A girl of around 18-23. Looking to get noticed, especially by the naive Touchy. She starts out as a Goth and changes her appearance all the way through in her attempts to grab his attention.
SYNOPSIS
The play is set in the run down design studio of WTBI? A small design company who rent office space in a block that caters for low rent small businesses, including ‘Ashton Drake Interiors’, Libby’s one woman company.
Libby has a new pet charity, set up in honour of husband Ed. She believes that, through her planned charity fun run, she could be finally launched into ‘Lenny Henry’ territory. Keen to show the world her supreme talent for charitable caring, she entrusts Ken Bunten’s Design Agency ‘WTBI?’ to create a campaign concept. Senior designer, Sean struggles for ideas whilst the creative potential of junior designer Touchy is ignored, though not by new receptionist Amanda, who attempts to shapeshift her way into his affections.
Relax, loosen your trainers and prepare to see the fun side of running for charity. If you like to run, like to watch others run, or if you were simply ‘born to run’...this is the one for you.
